Designed for junior high vocalists, the primary focus of this program is developing individual musicianship through a choral ensemble setting. Classes include full ensemble and sectional rehearsals, music theory and appreciation, group voice lessons, conducting, and musicianship.
Format: In-Person on the Urbana-Champaign campus.
- For students completing grades 6-8.
- Sopranos: Apply early as spots tend to fill quickly.
Typical Daily Schedule
8 – 8:40 am: Sectionals
8:45 – 10 am: Full Rehearsal
10:15 – 11:50 am: Voice Class & Listening Class
12:00 – 100 pm: Lunch
1:15 – 2:10 pm: Ensemble Rehearsal
2:20 – 3:35 pm: Full Rehearsal
3:45 – 4:45 pm: Electives
5:15 pm: Dinner and Evening Activities
10:30 pm: Lights out

- There is no audition requirement for acceptance to this program.
- Acceptance notifications are sent on a rolling basis.
- Additional information will be available after April 1, 2022, including audition information for placement within the program.
- Resident – $800 (tuition, room and board)
- Commuter – $550 (tuition and lunch only)
Julia Beer, Chiddix & Evans Junior High Schools, Bloomington, IL
Ms. Julia Beer has taught high school and junior high choral music for 30 years. For the past 8 years, she has served as the choral director for Chiddix Junior High and Evans Junior High Schools within the McLean County Unit District 5, located in Bloomington, Illinois. The programs at each school serve choral music students in grades 6, 7 & 8, including extracurricular Honors Choirs, small ensembles and summer choir.
Prior to her position in Unit 5, Ms. Beer served as choral director at Eureka CUSD 140, Stillman Valley High School, Metamora High School and Peoria Heights High School. A native of Catlin, Illinois, Ms. Beer received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Music Education degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has served as the ILMEA District 3 Junior Chorus Chair and as an instructor and counselor for the ISYM Junior and Senior Choir programs over the past 30 years. Ms. Beer is an active clinician and adjudicator throughout Central Illinois and maintains a private piano studio outside of school She resides in Bloomington with her children Jonah, Noah, Jane and Ellie.
