Intermediate Music Technology

The Intermediate Music Technology program is designed for students who are already actively using music technology software, and who are interested and passionate about the wider world of contemporary software tools and techniques for making electronic music. In addition to DAW-based work, students will also learn some introductory audio coding techniques using free audio programming languages, such as Sonic Pi and SuperCollider.

Format: in-person on the Urbana-Champaign campus.


  • For students completing grades 8-12.
  • Students must have access to a laptop computer (macOS or Windows) with their preferred DAW software installed.
  • Students should have either over-the-ear headphones or good quality studio loudspeakers. Access to a MIDI controller and condenser microphone is a plus. Students should also be prepared to download some additional (free) audio software on their computers.
  • Students should make their past creative work shareable, e.g. uploaded to Soundcloud or another file-sharing service.

Tentative Intermediate Music Technology Daily Schedule

9:00 – 10:00 AM: Listening to Electronic Music
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM: DAW Composition Projects & Discussion
1:00 – 2:30 PM: Introduction to Audio Coding Techniques
2:30 – 3:30 PM: Electronic Music-Making – Free Exploration

Program Faculty

Dr. Eli Fieldsteel, University of Illinois

Dr. Eli Fieldsteel, serving as Director of the University of Illinois Experimental Music Studios since 2016, is a composer specializing in music technology with a diverse history of cross-disciplinary collaboration. He is the recipient of the 2014 James E. Croft Grant for Young and Emerging Wind Band Composers, first prize in the 2012 ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commission Competition, as well as awards and recognition from other organizations, including the Bandmasters’ Academic Society of Japan and the Frank Ticheli Competition. His music has been performed nationally and internationally by ensembles such as the Dallas Wind Symphony, the North Texas Symphony Orchestra, the Kawagoe Sohwa Wind Ensemble of Tokyo, and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Wind Ensemble. His music is published under Lovebird Music, and has been recorded on the SEAMUS and Aerocade Music record labels.
